Background of the study:
Poverty and malnutrition are interlinked issues that significantly affect child development, particularly among children under five in Oredo Local Government Area. Economic deprivation restricts access to nutritious food, leading to undernourishment and stunted physical and cognitive growth (Ibrahim, 2023). In many households, low income limits the ability to secure balanced diets, thereby increasing the risk of malnutrition. Additionally, inadequate healthcare services and poor sanitation compound these challenges, creating a cycle of poverty and poor health outcomes (Okafor, 2024). Recent community initiatives and governmental programs have attempted to address these issues; however, their impacts remain inconsistent. The disparity between resource allocation and actual improvements in nutritional status calls for a detailed investigation into the socio-economic determinants of malnutrition. This study employs both quantitative assessments and qualitative interviews to explore how poverty directly contributes to malnutrition among young children, examining variables such as household income, education, and access to health services (Oma, 2025). By doing so, the research aims to develop policy recommendations that target the root causes of malnutrition and foster long-term improvements in child health and development.
Statement of the problem:
In Oredo Local Government Area, a significant number of children under five suffer from malnutrition due to pervasive poverty. Inadequate income and limited access to nutritious foods have resulted in widespread undernourishment, while health services remain underutilized. The gap between intervention programs and actual community needs demands a focused study to elucidate the poverty–malnutrition linkage (Eze, 2023).
Objectives of the study:
1. To determine the prevalence of malnutrition among children under five.
2. To examine the relationship between household poverty and child nutritional status.
3. To propose targeted policy measures to alleviate malnutrition.
Research questions:
1. What is the extent of malnutrition among children in Oredo?
2. How does poverty influence nutritional outcomes in children under five?
3. What strategies can mitigate the effects of poverty on child malnutrition?
Research Hypotheses:
1. Poverty is significantly correlated with higher malnutrition rates in children.
2. Households with lower income are more likely to experience child malnutrition.
3. Effective intervention programs will reduce malnutrition in impoverished areas.
Significance of the study:
The study underscores the critical interplay between economic status and child health, informing stakeholders on effective resource allocation to combat malnutrition. Its findings will aid in formulating targeted interventions to break the poverty–malnutrition cycle (Uche, 2024).
Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to exploring the relationship between poverty and malnutrition among children under five within Oredo Local Government Area, focusing solely on local economic and health variables.
Definitions of terms:
1. Poverty: A state where individuals lack sufficient income to meet basic needs.
2. Malnutrition: A condition resulting from an imbalanced intake of nutrients.
3. Child Nutritional Status: The health condition of children as influenced by dietary intake and growth parameters
